Paul Friedman

Paul Friedman currently is senior news consultant to ABC News and the head of Friedman News Consultancy.

From March, 2000 to February, 2003, he was executive vice president and managing editor, news coverage, for ABC News. He was responsible for all news gathering (the national and foreign news desks and all bureaus, both domestic and international) and for coverage on "World News Tonight with Peter Jennings," "World News Saturday and Sunday," "World News Now," "World News This Morning," and "Good Morning America's" news inserts. He supervised special, live coverage of major breaking news events. He produced ABC's award winning coverage of 9/11 and the anniversary of 9/11.

From April, 1997 to March, 2000 and from January, 1988 to January, 1993, Mr. Friedman was the executive producer of "World News Tonight with Peter Jennings," overseeing all aspects of the network's flagship newscast. Under him, the broadcast rose to become the highest rated evening news program. In 1988, Mr. Friedman created the award winning "American Agenda" for "World News Tonight," an extended news feature which examined critical domestic issues of the day. In the fall of 1992 he added "Your Money Your Choice," a weekly segment which analyzed how the federal government spends taxpayer money. Mr. Friedman also won highly favorable reviews for "World News Tonight's" coverage of the 1992 presidential campaign.

Mr. Friedman joined ABC News in 1982 as a senior producer in London. In 1984 he was named director of news coverage for Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Based in London, he was responsible for the operation of all ABC News Bureaus in those areas.

Prior to joining ABC News, Mr. Friedman spent 14 years at NBC News. From 1976 to 1979, he was executive producer of "Today." He was executive producer with various news magazine programs at NBC News between 1980 and 1982.

Mr. Friedman joined NBC News in 1967 as a newswriter for WNBC in New York City. After covering both national political conventions in 1968 for the NBC radio network, he became a television reporter for WRC TV, NBC's station in Washington. He became a field producer for "The Huntley Brinkley Report" in 1970, and in 1972 was named senior producer for "NBC Weekend Nightly News." Two years later he became executive producer of "New 4 New York" at WNBC TV, and in 1975 was named senior producer of "NBC Nightly News."

Mr. Friedman received a Master's degree from the Columbia School of Journalism in 1967. He graduated in 1966 from Princeton University with a Bachelor's degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He and his wife, Gillian, reside in New York City, with their two daughters.
