Never before has the need for smart, well-trained, ethical journalists been so great as it is now, in these early years of the 21st century.

Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism has been preparing journalists in a program that stresses academic rigor, ethics, journalistic inquiry and professional practice for nearly one hundred years.

The journalism school offers two masters degrees and a Ph.D. in Communications, and we encourage students to take advantage of the university's remarkable resources, including the highest quality of teaching and learning available.

The one-year Master of Science degree is a world-renowned professional education program which teaches the skills and professional ethics of journalism. It leaves graduates equipped to perform at a high level in general-assignment jobs in any journalistic medium.

“Our republic and its press will rise and fall together.”
—Joseph Pulitzer

In 2005, a one-year Master of Arts degree was started, which equips journalists with deep subject-matter expertise and advanced journalistic techniques. Our M.A. program helps journalists become experts in specific subject areas, through an education specifically tailored to the practice of journalism. Students apply to the two programs separately, although they may be taken in sequence if an M.S. student applies and is accepted.

At any point in your career, this is a unique opportunity to study with our outstanding faculty - including scholars and experts from various disciplines, many of whom are award-winning journalists - in New York City, the best news laboratory in the world. After graduation our alumni forge successful careers in all aspects of news media. The Graduate School of Journalism continues to prepare the next generation of journalism leaders.
