TV Studio 501B

The Journalism School's TV studio

The Journalism School's TV studio houses a professional news set with several shooting positions. Robotic cameras capture the action remotely in the adjacent control room while lighting is controlled with a digital dimmer board. The design of the studio allows for a professional studio environment that can be operated with a small staff.

• 26’x26’ room with a fixed lighting grid (floor to grid clearance of 10 feet)
• 21 quartz lighting instruments.
• State of the art ETC dimmer board with unlimited scene memory
• Remote operation control of lighting
• Sound absorbent materials line studio walls. The studio was constructed to NC-25 sound standards
• Three Hitachi Z4000W TXD1 cameras with Fujinon A20x8.6BRM lenses
• Vinten SE-500 pedestals with remote pan/tilt/elevation/zoom controls
• All three cameras are configured with teleprompters
• 42” plasma display for displaying video and graphics during broadcasts

The TV control room handles operations for broadcasts in the TV studio.

• Front Row: Graphics (Pinnacle Deko 500), Director/Vision, Mixer Producer/auxiliary
• Back Row: Audio, Prompter and Executive producer
• Ample room exists behind the rear deck for additional participants
• The video desk is a 32 input Grass Valley Kayak DD-2 digital switcher
• Camera control including touch screen shot selection and video control
• Video playback via AirSpeed ‘Countdown.’
• Primary video monitoring with twin 45” Sharp LCD’s fed by a Mirand, Kaliedo Alto-AD multiplexer
• Soundcraft audiomixer accommodates up to 48 inputs, configured to output 8 mono or 4 stereo groups
• 2 Telos Hybrid telephone interface
• Clearcom IFB
• Source equipment includes Denon CD player, Digicart, Tascam MiniDisc and both Sennheiser hard line and wireless microphones
• Communication throughout the facility is provided by a Telex/RTS BTR-800 System
• Routing of digital and analogue signals is via a BTS 32x32 router

Whisper Room 504 hallway

The Whisper room is an isolated voice-over booth. The audio signal can be sent directly to an Avid project or can be sent through the router to any location in the studio.

Non-linear Editing Suites

The Journalism School's non-linear
editing suites

The editing suites feature 40 Avid systems utilizing the Newscutter XP software.

• 5th Floor edit suites 504C, D, E, F, G, K, L, M, N, O
10 edit rooms are housed adjacent to the broadcast studio on the 5th floor
Each stations utilizes dual monitor displays, DSR-11 decks, mic preamps for voiceover recording directly into Avid, and NTSC monitors
• Doc Lab 403
The lab houses six edit stations that are equipped with dual monitor displays and Sony DSR-11 decks and one instructor’s station
• Fred Friendly Newsroom 501A
Houses 18 Avid stations with Sony DSR-11 decks and one instructors station that is attached to a ceiling projector for viewing Avid projects and video sources of the studio’s router

All media is available on the ‘Unity’ server. Recorded, edited product ‘airs’ by being ‘pushed’ to an Airspeed server then stacked and ‘rolled’ to air via the Countdown computer.
