In the Public Eye [requires Real Player]
By Georgi GoldmanThis documentary examines the use of surveillance cameras in New York City since September 11. The terrorist attacks re-invigorated a debate that has been taking place for some time. Some say surveillance cameras and surveillance equipment are a violation of the fourth ammendment. Others say that in light of the attacks, we need to have tighter security, and one way to do this is through surveillance cameras and new surveillance technology.
In this documentary, you will see a store located across the street from ground zero that increased its use of surveillance cameras since Sept. 11; a store that sells cameras hidden in almost every imaginable object; technology that can identify people by the contours of their face; a group that performs silent plays in front of surveillance cameras in protest; expert opinions; and more.
These characters paint a picture of a societal puzzle in which it is unclear how the pieces of civil liberties and security will fit together.
