Student acts out against AIDS

by Mariah Blake

The AIDS epidemic is still raging. A third of those living in some parts of the world are infected. Colin Powell has called AIDS "the biggest problem.. on Earth today" and said it's a major threat to homeland security because it destabalizes nations. Yet AIDS is rarely mentioned by presidential candidates.

A group of students at Columbia University have decided they want to do something to change this. They formed the Columbia AIDS Action Network late last year, it's dedicated to getting AIDS on candidates' agenda. They say they plan on making their voice heard at every event in the lead up to the New York primaries, and will use guerilla tactics if necessary.Yesterday a group of them stole John Edward's thunder when they surrounded him and chanted "Campaign on Aid" in the middle of his Columbia University speech. The stunt dominated the media's coverage of the event on outlets like CNN. Aaron Boyle is a graduate student at teacher's college and one of the group's organizers. We spoke in the studio about his group's efforts to draw attention back to a forgotten epidemic.
