Your Demo Tape

Your demo tape is your radio clip file. It is often referred to as an "air check"-- i.e. what you sound like on the air. Your broadcast work in any of the radio classes provide you with that material. In addition to the demo tape, you should suggest in your cover letter and resume that your work can be heard as webcasts on the Columbia University Internet radio site at http://web.jrn.columbia.edu/studentwork/radio/.  You can include specific addresses/urls to your own pieces.

Here are some suggestions for compiling your tape:

  • A demo tape should be recorded on cassette or DAT tape. Include two or three of your best pieces. At least one should demonstrate that you can use sound and documentary techniques.
  • At least one or two news spots (45 second, spot news coverage, with a piece of actuality if possible.)
  • A written and recorded newscast if possible.
  • Hosting/anchoring ability: Include tape of you hosting, interviewing, etc.
  • Quality is paramount: news directors will listen for well recorded actuality
  • Consider putting a 30 second intro at the top of the tape, saying who you are, what’s on the tape, that you mixed the pieces yourself on Pro Tools digital work stations. Short and sweet. Just information, no sell job.
