HinduismA Community That Plays Together, But Doesn't Pray TogetherChris Karmiol May 12, 2004It's not every day that children can walk right up to their parents and other adults, douse them with colored paint, then run away laughing -- at least not without consequences. Chris Karmiol May 9, 2004On a typical Saturday night, most passersby on the corner of St. Mark's Place and Second Avenue are probably thinking of things other than eternal life, unlike the devotees of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), who are there to promote it. Chris Karmiol May 9, 2004The sign reads "No Shoes Beyond This Point, " so the slight, dark-skinned man leaves his shoes on a rack in the cold air and walks barefoot across the snowy path, up the steps to the Hindu Temple Society of North America, on Bowne Street in Flushing. Chris Karmiol April 19, 2004A bare-chested Hindu priest bathed the temple's centerpiece, a statue of Ganesh, the elephant-headed god, in coconut water, milk, ghee and yogurt, a process that took more than a half an hour. He then rinsed off the statue and, behind a drawn curtain, dressed it in fine silk and silver, a daily ritual at the Hindu Temple Society in Flushing, Queens.
